 The last album by the original lineup of Defiance before an extended hiatus, Nothing Lasts Forever has a dispirited, defeatist tone -- even more so than usual for this brand of metal-tinged post-hardcore punk -- in both the album title and songs like the sneering "Kill the Bastards" and the churning thrash of "It's Never Gonna Change." At its best, particularly on the pounding but surprisingly catchy "Don't Want It" (which recalls the likes of Slaughter & the Dogs or other pub-rooted '70s U.K. punk bands) and the uplifting, passionate "Nothing Worth Dying For," Nothing Lasts Forever is Defiance at the peak of their game. Unfortunately, the album's not particularly even, with headbanging anthems like the outstandingly rabble-rousing "You Don't Know" next to cuts like a limp, weedy remake of the Motörhead/Girlschool collaboration "Emergency," making the album an often outstanding but occasionally frustrating temporary sendoff to a promising band.
